Seychelles is the first Indian Ocean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to receive “white flag” certification for its clean sea.
The first white flag of the island nation was put on Saturday on Beau Vallon Beach – a popular beach with visitors – north of the main island of Mahe. The white flag indicates that the area is one of the first certified safe marine areas in the world.
The certification recognizes the beach as having been physically cleaned from plastics and other marine debris. Since its launch in Monaco in 2012, White Flag International has become a major symbol representing clean and plastic-free areas for locals and tourists, as well as for marine life.(…)
