A Mauritian oceanographer estimates that the 4.4 magnitude earthquake felt in Reunion Island on Monday 21 September could be linked to the birth of an underwater volcano in the west of Mauritius. A hypothesis to be considered with caution and to which the Observatoire volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF) has not yet reacted. The Mauritian researcher takes the example of Mayotte, which experienced many earthquakes before realizing the existence of an underwater volcano 50 km from the coast.
