The Makuba ferry, carrying 25 passengers coming from Katsepy, sank in the open sea a few minutes from the port of Mahajanga yesterday around 16h. Two speedboats saved the passengers, so everyone is safe and sound. However, the livestock transported suffered some losses.
Twenty-one of the 31 zebu aboard the ferry were rescued, one died drowned while nine remain untraceable. The losses are estimated at millions of Ariary for the 10 missing or dead zebu. The owners of the speedboats at the dock have long hesitated to save the zebu, they tried to haggle instead of leaving immediately for the rescue of the cattle.
