(Seychelles News Agency) – A 9-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy died when a boat capsized following a busy holiday period on La Digue, Seychelles’ third-most populated island, the police said on Thursday. Sixteen people were onboard the boat called ‘Lyly’ travelling from La Digue to Praslin on Wednesday evening when it capsized near the Chauve Souris island. “The children who lost their lives were in the presence of at least one member of their family at the time the tragic incident occurred,” police spokesperson Jean Toussaint told reporters. (…) Toussaint said an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the latest accident. He said the police were alerted about the incident through a phone call and it took 10 minutes to reach the scene. “As it was already dark and the sea was very rough, it took us two hours for the whole rescue. The incident occurred during a time when there was a lot of movement on La Digue for the commemoration of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, the Patron Saint of the island on Wednesday night. The director general of the Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration (SMSA), Joachim Valmont, said that as per preliminary information they received, the boat was departing La Digue for Praslin at around 9 p.m. but did not inform authorities of their departure.
