The Government of the Republic of Seychelles and mobile operators Airtel and Cable and Wireless Seychelles (CWS), through Seychelles Cable Systems Company Ltd. (SCSCL), have decided to invest in a second country connection to a cable optical fiber submarine. According to Benjamin Choppy, the chief secretary of the Information and Communication Technologies Department, who is also president of SCSCL, the investment in this new submarine connection is not only of financial interest, but also sovereign. Through this new connection, the government would like to guarantee the continuity of telecommunications services in the event of an incident on the only cable to which the country is connected, the Seychelles East Africa System (SEAS). According to Benjamin Choppy, the SEAS supports more than 90% of the country’s Internet traffic. The rest is managed by satellite. (…) The implementation of the new connection to submarine optical fiber, the government would like to achieve by the end of 2019.
