Locally assembled sea vessel, MV 001, has made eight successful deep-sea excursions, helping fishermen haul in 6,117kg fish since its first voyage. The vessel construction was funded by the Mombasa government and the KCB Foundation for Sh15 million. Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho launched the 10-tonne capacity vessel in November last year. The first voyage was on November 24.

On Sunday, the fishermen brought 986kg after a three-day fishing expedition in the deep sea, within the 200 nautical miles of the Kenyan coast. In the first seven trips, at least 5,131kg fish were caught. Captain Swaleh Ramadhan said the vessel has increased their earnings. Before, they had to use small boats that could not venture into deep waters.
