More than 300 fishing boats will benefit from a new initiative launched by Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in cooperation with Oman LNG. The support project titled, “Marine safety equipment bag” for fishermen in the governorate of South Sharqiyah, will include more than 10 safety and navigation equipment for fishermen. The directorate general of agriculture and fishers in Southern Shariqyah signed an agreement with Oman LNG development foundation which aimed to strengthen maritime safety procedures. The project which will be funded by Oman LNG will benefit more than 300 fishermen in the governorate, at a cost of OMR 30,000. The bag includes tools such as a first aid kit, a water-proof marine jacket, a waterproof life jacket in case of drowning, a paddle in the event of a boat crash, a fireproof blanket, assistance lamps, and mechanical tools for maintenance, and a navigation device. (…) “The agreement comes within the framework of continuous cooperation between the ministry and the development foundation. “The aim of the project is to guide and educate fishermen on the importance of owning marine safety bags, by providing them with navigational equipment, which will protect them while fishing,” added Al Farsi. Southern Al Shariqyah governorate is rich in fisher’s wealth and has approximately 10,000 fishermen.
