It was a moment of relief for 18 fishermen. Eighteen fishermen from Uttara Kannada district were detained by Iranian authorities for illegally entering their country five months ago. Now all 18 fishermen were released. The release was facilitated by the intervention of the external affairs ministry, SS Nakul, deputy commissioner of Uttara Kannada confirmed. The fishermen were detained at Kish, an island, since July 27 for illegally entering the country. The fishermen — 6 from Bhatkal, three from Murudeshwar, six from Kumta, and one each from Ankola, Honnavar and Shiroor — had been detained. The fishermen were working on three boats owned by a citizen of the United Arab Emirates. The fishermen had allegedly entered Iranian waters by accident.
